Reelblack’s Soul Food Cinema is proud to host the 20th Anniversary screening of the Sundance award-winnier CHAMELEON STREET (1989/Color/ 94 minutes).
Unjustly neglected upon its initial release, writer/director/lead actor Wendell B. Harris’ tour-de-force about an amazing con man, William Douglas Street who exchanges his dead-end life for a brand-new identity. In fact, many new identities...reporter, doctor, lawyer, Detroit Tiger! He becomes whatever he can to make some money, and soon his life is turned upside down. This art-house comedy provides a snapshot of the direction African-American film could’ve taken, had there been more opportunities for visionary independent filmmakers like Harris (sadly, this remains his only feature film credit to date). Compare to Will Smith’s performance in SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, which was also inspired by the same true story.
Please arrive early (6:30pm) for a Reelblack’s special tribute to Michael Jackson - a rare screening of THE JACKSON FIVE LIVE IN MEXICO (1974/ Color/50 minutes). Michael is at his dancing best while the Jacksons (sans Jermaine) perform songs from the latter half of their Motown career along with medleys of their early hits.
